Have you noticed how some people are really aware of phones – mobile phones? I would definitely not classify myself as a ‘techie’. I may have taught computing at university but that really doesn’t count ten years later. The speed of technology and the changes that have taken place make the specifics of my knowledge and understanding almost prehistoric JI remember my first Maverick’s lunch run by Judith Germain. After a brilliant networking lunch at Pizza Express we headed off for a relaxing afternoon of continued networking in a near by hotel. I was still new to Ecademy at that point and didn’t know a lot of people. Then there came a moment, where I too, marvelled at a mobile phone. Simon George  pulled his phone from his pocket and I swear it was round (please correct me if I am wrong Simon J ) I had to admit for a moment I was really impressed, it looked very sexy (if an inanimate object that can’t reproduce could take on human characteristics – this phone did!). Then of course practical Vicki woke up and started to wonder how anyone’s figures could even hit the buttons !

This is the point where I should mention the state of my technology. We do at home of course have all the latest gadgets; Sky Plus, which I love and strongly recommend as you never have to watch another ridiculous advert in your life and it cuts down the amount of time it takes to watch a programme by at least 20% (maybe that reveals far too much about me …..). Anyway back to gadgets … we are fanatical photographers (maybe fanatical is a bit strong – well very keen anyway J ) and have assorted gadgets associated with digital underwater photography.

At this point you might be wondering why I am bragging about my possessions, please excuse me I don’t mean to, in fact I am trying to off set the damage that maybe caused by this next statement. I still own (very proudly) a Nokia 6310i , I have for the last 8-9 years, (althought I am on my third one :) ).

I drop it on a regular basis (not deliberately you understand), and it still works. My daughters always seem to want the latest phone that is mainly because exactly 13 months after we bought the last one (and of course one month after the warranty runs out) their phone “doesn’t work any more”.

While my phone does provoke comments like “Oh my G*d! I haven’t seen one of those in years” and “Wow I didn’t realise those phones still existed”, people do ask to hold it, almost reverently J It maybe a little heavier than ‘modern’ phones but that means I can feel it in my pocket. It maybe a little bigger than other phones but that means I can hit the buttons I want first time. It may not take pictures, have a poly something ring tone or a flip screen/lid, but its reliable and hard working and I couldn’t live without it J how’s yours?

While there are lots of brilliant new inventions, it doesn’t mean that everything reliable or should I say ‘old’ needs to be thrown out. If you throw out your video player in favour of a DVD how will you play your favourite videos again, maybe even your wedding video if you had one made !. What about your laser disc collection? Ok maybe that’s just Bob, my partner, he does of course have, or has had, every gadget going. (His latest toy is a laser light measuring thing – I think its basically a tape measure for someone too lazy to use a tape measure !!)

Wow when I think about the amount of technology we have just discarded in favour of the latest gadgets only to replace that four or five years later. How much money have we thrown away. Its hard with Health and Safety legislation to even pass electrical products on to other people. It just made me wonder  … what have you thrown away recently, or even better what have you still kept, may be even use? What do you miss?
