That was amazing wind last night – I was woken up as it started to whistle through the open windows and I could feel the pressure in the bedroom as each gust pushed through. As I drifted back to sleep the rhythm of the wind and the ebb and flow of pressure must have reminded me of the underwater currents I have experienced when scuba diving, as my alter-ego The Property Mermaid :)

As I fell back asleep and started to dream – I remembered the scuba dives Bob and I did in the Maldives. Here the sea is forced through the narrow openings between the islands with such force that as a diver, (even The Property Mermaid!)  it is almost impossible to swim across. The openings between the islands are called Kandos and we laughingly called the crossing Kan’t-do’s as we had previously attempted a crossing in the current.

We soon learnt that, in actual fact, going with the flow can be really enjoyable, as Bob effortlessly flies along in the current :)   I don’t know about you, but I find I am getting so many mixed messages about “not being part of the crowd”, “entrepreneurs see what the masses do and then do the opposite”, yet we are instinctively pack animals, how do you know when to follow the pack and make life easy and ‘swim-tastic’ or ‘struggle’ against the current … the current wave of thinking and do something no-one else is doing.

I think if we knew the definitive answer – we would ALL be incredibly rich :) There is one thing that entrepreneurs definitely know, and that is the prevailing market conditions, what is to be gain by going with the flow and what is to be gained by swimming against the current. Research, networking, continual professional development, reading and mentoring is what helps them make these choices. Every successful business person and entrepeneur has a mentor.

Do you have a mentor? Who do you turn to for advice, support, encouragement or a second opinion. I have a coach (to whom I turn for a challenge when I feel I have taken a step back), a buddy (a fellow professional – that offers second opinions and new twists, as working alone can lack the opportunity for debate), and I have a mentor, a professional that I meet with regularly, that is at the end of the phone, that both challenges me, supports me and works with me to develop my business.

Seeking appropriate mentoring support and professional networks is not a sign of weakness it is a sign of strength :)

Do you need a mentor?

Hanging on at 25 metres off the Southern Ari Atoll in a forceful current meant that we got to see 8-10 foot White Tip Sharks having their gills cleaned by tiny Fusilier Fish at a cleaning station. The Sharks didn’t seem to be moving and yet we were tied on for dear life :) What is hard for some – maybe easy for others – know where to get your help :)
