Have you ever kissed a stranger in the loo?
No I am not wandering into the realms of porn !! I am a very tactile person – happy to shake hands, but then those that know me know after 12 months training with Christopher Howard - I love a hug. That has simply given me the excuse to let out my Italian side and hug and kiss everyone (almost) that I meet
After a long day networking with people I knew well through Ecademy Blackstar, and of course the inevitable hugs and kisses on both cheeks – I set off to an evening function while I was still in town. As I walked into the ladies toilets I saw someone I recognised, I smiled and said hello, she beamed hello and a smile back. I was walking fast at the time and by this point had crossed the hand basin area and walked straight up to her and hugged her
Well she was smiley, welcoming and familiar – I thought I knew her. Mid-embrace my mind said this is Jennifer off the TV, that’s why she looks familiar – she is tonight guest speaker !!
It all happened so fast – I was still hugging her as I started to apologise, explain and of course introduce myself !!! well that’s one way to make an impression. Fortunately Jennifer took it in good spirits and didn’t avoid me all night
In fact I was able to recommended and introduced her to a speaker for their event in the Autumn.
While there are inherent damages in just approaching all sorts of people – networking in its more pure form
is a powerful business tool. The opportunity to meet new people and expand your own network. With the growing reliance upon social marketing (including the technologically inspired Facebook, Linkedin, Ecademy and Twitter), it is even more a case of who you know. It is who you know that knows someone that needs your services, your property, will be your tenant / customer or may even sell you something of value – like a property :)
Get networking – whether to specialised industry focused events (I have mentioned some before) or to more general and mixed events like Ecademy networking events, or BNI and NRG meetings – there are also events run by local Chambers of Commerce and Buisness Links depending on your area. Get networking and get your network working for you
